Fed up of Facebook and its algorithms, we have been looking for an alternative to commercial social networks, and we may already have it.
Fediverse: what is it?
The Fediverse is a network of independent servers that communicate with each other to create a decentralized social network. Instead of relying on a single global platform, each server (called an instance) can host its own users, who are able to interact with those from other instances.
Through this system, there is an attempt to provide more control over personal data and privacy without algorithms who decide on their own what to show.
The most famous service is Mastodon but there are many others, and the fediverse can be installed in every WordPress-based site thanks to the ActivityPub component.
Making it shorter, it works like email: a mastodon address can follow our blog on plusbrothers.net just like it happens with e-mail: an address registered on Google can write to one from Microsoft, Yahoo and similar. Hashtags, words with the # at the beginning because using the appropriate ones will bring a post to the world’s attention.
