We confirm our decision to gradually abandon Facebook but thanks to this social network we have learned about a solidarity campaign (now closed) in which we were delighted to participate: a university student, in Italy on a scholarship, found out that they had HIV but to access the Italian health public service (thus including antivirals) it takes 700 euros a year for people from outside the European Union.
The student could not afford such a high amount, and Dr. Massimo Cernuschi, an infectivologist, started a fundraiser so that from social networks people could make donations on his behalf.
Unfortunately we once have been fooled by a crowdfunding initiative started by a homosexual girl who needed a new home to stay then bought herself an expensive car through our solidarity donations, but in this case we had no hesitation: we know how serious Dr. Cernuschi is and, above all, we are aware of how important it is to start treatment as soon as possible when someone discovers they have HIV, so as to avert both damage to the immune system and the possibility of transmitting it to others.
This post is only meant to share our joy because in just a few days donations were able to guarantee this person health service coverage for two years. Two years of treatments maybe, it may not be a lot but at least it is some breathing room.
The campaign is now closed, but we were really proud to offer our limited possibilities to help someone. It doesn’t matter if we never meet this person in our life, we are conscious to do everything we can to concretely help people with HIV, and feel like thanking a community that, through a social network often full of hate, when solidarity is involved, does not hesitate to respond, making those in need feel welcome and loved.
